1Check fan with HWMonitorBoot Windows, install HWMonitor. Check CPU temperature at idle u2014 should be 40-50u00b0C. If >70u00b0C, fan/thermal issue.
2Clean air ventsPower off. Use compressed air to blow through the rear vents in short bursts. Hold the fan still with a toothpick to prevent over-spinning.⚠ Do not let the fan spin freely from compressed air u2014 it generates reverse current that can damage the motherboard.
3Open back coverRemove 10 Phillips screws. Use spudger to pry the cover. Start from a corner.
4Clean fan bladesUse a soft brush and isopropyl to clean the fan blades and heatsink fins. Clogged dust is the #1 cause of overheating.
5Remove heatsinkUnscrew the 4 heatsink screws in the order printed on the heatsink (1u21922u21923u21924). Lift heatsink straight up.⚠ Do not unscrew in random order u2014 this can warp the CPU socket.
6Clean old thermal pasteUse isopropyl alcohol + microfiber to clean the old paste off CPU die and heatsink base. Should be mirror-shiny.
7Apply new thermal pasteApply a pea-sized amount of Arctic MX-4 to the center of the CPU die. Reinstall heatsink u2014 pressure will spread it.⚠ Do not spread the paste manually u2014 let the heatsink pressure do it.
8Tighten heatsink in orderScrew heatsink back in order 1u21922u21923u21924, hand-tight. Do not overtighten.
9Test temperaturesReassemble, boot, run Prime95 for 10 minutes. CPU should peak at 75-85u00b0C. If above 95u00b0C, replace fan.
