Device Provisioning Workflow

Production firmware practical

Device Provisioning Workflow

Create a unique, auditable device identity and inject only the minimum required configuration.

Arduino-compatible frameworks, ESP-IDF/FreeRTOS, PIC/AVR/STM32/RP-class systems; apply exact vendor documentation for the selected MCU.

Architecture

Approved work order → serial allocation → identity/key provisioning → verification → signed manufacturing record.

Security and recovery risks

  • Never use one shared production secret across all devices.nDo not expose private keys in logs or exports.nRestrict provisioning authorization and retain audit evidence.

Implementation procedure

  1. Define serial-number format and collision prevention.nBind identity to hardware revision and product.nProvision per-device credentials using controlled tooling.nRead back only non-secret identifiers for verification.nRecord operator, station, time and result.

Required release artifacts

  • Versioned firmware binary and SHA-256
  • Source revision / build identifier
  • Board and hardware-revision compatibility list
  • Test report and known limitations
  • Recovery image and factory-reset procedure
  • Provisioning/calibration schema
  • Release approval record
