Drone Flight-Control Fundamentals

Study IMU axes, motor mixing, failsafe and control loops using simulation and a propeller-free restrained bench.

Learning objective

Study IMU axes, motor mixing, failsafe and control loops using simulation and a propeller-free restrained bench.

Components and tools

  • Development board
  • Current-limited low-voltage supply
  • Digital multimeter
  • Oscilloscope or logic analyser
  • Emergency power disconnect

Safety before motion

  • Do not provide active flight authorization; follow current local rules and approved sites.nNever configure or arm with propellers fitted indoors.nUse LiPo-safe charging/storage and a physical disarm method.

Practical procedure

  1. Remove all propellers before electronics testing.nVerify IMU orientation and stationary bias.nInspect receiver failsafe values.nRun motor-output test at minimum power without propellers.nUse simulation for PID and mixer experiments.
